The two books were analyzed in a contrasting method, aimed at finding the similarities and differences between the two. As someone who grew up in an atheist country, it is interesting to learn what the bible emphasized on.

Sources:

The data comes from the midterm dataset created by Professor Austin Mason, Carleton College. The original file was in XML format, and I didn’t change that since Voyant is capable of dealing with XML, although I have no prior experience with it.

Processes:

Data cleaning was not particularly necessary in this project, not only since I was not dealing with a csv form, but also because the original text file wasn’t that complicated with mistakes. However, there still are preparations needed. First, I had to precisely find out the two books I wanted to investigate. I opened the file via chrome, and then used Ctrl+F to find out the titles and endings. The next step is to copy and paste anything in between to create a new XML file. The new file was in a clear formatting mess, but Voyant is still good enough to handle it. Second, after I uploaded the new files into Voyant, I went to the stopwords list to delete words such as “unto” and “ye”, so-called archaic words that does not have much meaning in this context.

Presentation:

The presentation was not particularly difficult. Respectively, I uploaded the two files into Voyant, and then created analysis results using “cirrus”, “streamgraph”, and “link”. The results are then exported.

Visualization:

For no reason I was unable to embed the Voyant links, so I only left the links but not the embedded visualization.

Cirrus of “John”

Streamgraph of “John”

Link graph of “John”

Cirrus of “Luke”

Streamgraph of “Luke”

Link graph of “Luke”

Significance:

The results show the similarities and differences between the two books. For example, in the gospel according to John, there were a much higher frequency of the word “Jesus”, while in the beginning of the gospel according to Luke, there was a sudden increase in the word “son”. Those interesting results show the contents of the Bible in a very efficient and visible way, providing valuable insight for those unfamiliar with the text, for example myself.

Introduction: In my midterm project, I examined the New Testament using textual analysis tool Voyant. For a more meaningful study, the focus was on only two books of the twenty-seven: “Gospel According to Saint Luke” and “Gospel According to Saint John”.
